Getting a handle on stress is easier than you might realize—and April is stress awareness month—so it’s the perfect time. If you can give yourself even as little as a few minutes a day toward stress relief, those minutes will turn into hours over the years and your body will thank you. Here are some things you can do for stress awareness month and beyond:
Identify the stressors. Make sure you’re not discounting major stressors in your life. Even happy things like getting married, changing jobs, or having a baby contribute greatly to stress in the body. You might say that both “happy” stress and “difficult” stress are one and the same in the body.
Talk it out. If you need to talk to someone or are struggling, you can get a handle on stress by making an appointment with a health professional. I know this is the obvious answer, but you will feel so much better and more able to handle everything life throws at you with some professional guidance and resources.
Treat yourself right. If you can’t take a week off and go to Hawaii to lay on the beach for stress reduction month, then at least take an hour off or even 15 minutes each day in the evening. Do self-soothing activities like taking a bath, going for a walk, getting a massage, spending time with children or pets, watching funny movies, and laughing.
You Are Not Alone
There are two common sayings that I want to leave you with to further help you get a handle on stress this month. The first is that “laughter is the best medicine” and the second is that “if momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” As the creator of your life, you are the mother (or father) or all that you do. If you’re not taking good care of yourself, eventually things will break down and problems will appear. Take it from me: most people are stressed out and would benefit greatly from some relief. Find what works for you and make stress awareness month your time to heal.
